Welcome to Clicks & Clarity with Claire, where we turn Google Ads confusion into conversion.
I'm Claire Jarrett, and today we're tackling a critical question: Why aren't your Google Ads converting—and how can you fix it fast?
If you've ever felt frustrated watching your budget disappear with little to show for it, you're not alone.
Let's start with a common scenario.
I recently audited an account where the client was convinced their ads were performing brilliantly because their cost per lead looked fantastic on paper.
But when we dug deeper, we discovered their conversion tracking was completely off.
They were double-counting conversions, tracking irrelevant actions like page views, and even counting their own brand searches as paid leads.
The result?
Their real cost per lead was more than double what they thought.
This isn't just a minor error.
It's a fundamental issue that can mislead your entire strategy.
Accurate conversion tracking is the backbone of any successful Google Ads campaign.
If your tracking is off, every decision you make is based on faulty data.
I've seen businesses scale budgets based on incorrect tracking, only to realise months later they'd been throwing money away.
To fix this quickly, audit your current setup thoroughly.
Check for duplicate conversions, outdated tags, or tracking irrelevant actions.
Make sure you're tracking meaningful actions—phone calls, form submissions, or purchases—things that directly impact your bottom line.
And if you're not already using Google Tag Manager, start now.
It streamlines your tracking, ensures accuracy, and makes future adjustments easier.
Another major reason your ads aren't converting is that you're attracting the wrong audience.
Many advertisers mistakenly believe more clicks equal more leads.
But clicks from the wrong people are worthless.
I recently audited an account where ninety percent of the budget was spent attracting job seekers instead of employers.
The result?
A sales team drowning in unqualified leads and wasted time.
To fix your targeting, regularly review your Search Terms Report.
Identify irrelevant searches triggering your ads and exclude them immediately.
Aggressively use negative keywords to filter out low-intent searches like "jobs," "careers," "free," or competitor names.
Refine your keyword match types, using exact and phrase match keywords to maintain control over who sees your ads.
Now, let's talk about your landing pages.
Even if your tracking and targeting are perfect, a poor landing page can kill conversions instantly.
Your landing page must match your ad's promise exactly.
If your ad offers a quote for solar panel installation, your landing page better deliver precisely that—not a generic homepage or unrelated service page.
Create dedicated landing pages for each ad group or service.
Ensure your landing page headline matches your ad headline closely.
Include clear, compelling calls to action that guide visitors towards conversion.
Finally, let's address budget allocation.
Spreading your budget too thin across low-intent traffic is a common mistake.
Instead, focus your spend on high-intent searches—people actively looking to buy right now.
Identify your highest-converting keywords and ad groups, and shift budget away from broad, low-intent keywords towards these proven performers.
Continuously monitor and refine your bids to maximise ROI.
Let's recap the key points:
Fix your conversion tracking immediately to ensure accurate data.
Refine your targeting by aggressively using negative keywords and precise match types.
Align your landing pages exactly with your ads to boost conversions.
Allocate your budget towards high-intent, proven keywords.
Remember, Google Ads success isn't about getting the most clicks—it's about getting the right clicks.
Clicks from people ready to buy.
Clicks that turn into customers.
That's all for today's episode of Clicks & Clarity with Claire.
